Discipline of Verification

Journalism of verfification and journalism of assertion differ in many ways. Journalism of verification seeks after hard facts, ensuring that their viewer gets the whole story. Journalism of verification helps create a tight bond with the journalist and the viewer. However, journalism of verification does take longer to break a news story, and in a business where being the first to cover a breaking news story is critical, journalistic integrity seems to be on the decline.
Journalism of assertion is unsubstantiated opinion and rumor which harms journalistic credibility. This type of journalism lets journalists basically say whatever they want, and then say they got the information from another source that hasn't been verified yet. I think that this is lazy journalism. It lets journalists become lazy, as they don't have to research and seek out the truth. Because of this, journalism of assertion leads to false journalism which further the gaps of trust between the journalist and viewer. It also leads to journalists to lower ethical standards and sensationalize stories.

Transparency must play a big part in journalism, however, there are times when transparency can hinder journalistic work. It is apparent that the public wants journalists to be transparent i.e. tell who their sources are and where they come from. The public wants this because they want verification. If there are anonymous sources, the viewers lose trust sometimes. However, not being transparent can help journalists break important news stories. Take the Watergate Scandal which was uncovered because of the "Deep Throat" anonymous source. http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:7jo4L2TQNCEJ:www.journalismethics.ca/online_journalism_ethics/new_media_trends.htm+Journalism+of+assertion&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
The authors in our readings say that journalists need to practice intellectual humility because it helps connect with their viewers. If a journalist comes off as being too intellectual, it can rub off as haughty and arrogant. Viewers do not want to feel stupid and less then the journalist who is reporting the news. If a journalist is too intellectual, they can not connect with their viewers on an intellectual level, not to mention, the reporter will lose viewers and/or readers.
The saying, "When in doubt, leave it out" rings true for journalists these days. The group did a good job in leading discussions in their presentation on what and what not to report. The accuracy checklist helped support the presentation and the values of a journalist that they presented. In order to ensure that journalists gain a better reputation, verification of sources in reports must be inside most stories.
